The Point Defense System is a space ability. When activated it automatically attacks nearby enemies. It is only available on player ships equipped with the console that comes with the Heavy Escort Refit, purchasable on the Zen Store for 1000 Zen.
Unlike abilities such as Cannon: Scatter Volley, the point defense system does not upgrade the next attack from a cannon weapon, but rather acts as a weapon it its own right. It does not require the player's ship to be equipped with any specific type of weapon.
On activation, the point defense system will fire at up to ten targets within range for 10 seconds. It will fire at any targetable object, but does additional damage to small craft and frigates. The more objects there are within range, the less damage will be done per shot.
This is a useful ability for neutralizing carrier pets, but it of limited utility against heavy torpedoes, due to its short duration and long, 3 minute cool-down time.

The system is fully automated and is designed to destroy small threats like mines, and small crafts like fighters and shuttles, dealing ten time damage to those targets, as well as 3 times damage to frigates. The system will attack multiple random targets, but will consider targets in close proximity to be a priority. The Point Defense System provides 360 degree defense, has bonus accuracy, but has limited range - about half typical weapons range. Normal ship operations, including standard weapon systems, can continue while the Point Defense System is active, and the system can be deactivated early if desired.
