Data Sample Analysis is a broad term for four different duty officer assignments which can be obtained from the Engineering Lab Science Officer onboard your ship. When talking to the Science Officer, they are found by asking him about "Special Projects" then choosing "Data Sample Analysis".
There are four distinct assignments. Three of them require 120 units of commonly-discoverable data samples found both in space and ground missions. These samples are typically used by players to craft, but can be used here for rapid advancement in the science and exploration commendation tracks.

The fourth assignment uses 30 common particle traces — but the payoff is a whopping 1500 science points for a single, eight-hour assignment.
All of these assignments are repeatable without limit, and repetition does not decrease the rewards.
