Damage over Time (often shortened to DoT) is a common term in MMORPGs. It is used primarily to describe effects that cause enemy players damage over intervals (also known as ticks). As an example in Star Trek Online a DoT would be the damage over time effect of a Plasma Grenade. Players will often see this term used on ability and skill descriptions, and also in release notes from Cryptic.
The Primary difference between a Dot ability and a Hazard is Dots remain on the player or ship until cleared or they expire. Hazard or most science abilities (while typically a Dot) only affect an area and can be flown out of (Example Gravity Well or Tykens Rift).
In space combat, Hazard Emitters, Engineering Team or Intelligence Team will clear the majority of Dot(only) effects for their given specialization.
