The Daystrom Institute is a Federation research and development organization established in the 23rd cenutry. It is affiliated to another organization known as the Soong Foundation.
In 2380 the institute predicted that the Cardassian Union could fall in as little as three years without more successful projects such as the Andak project.
Seven of Nine joined the Institute in 2385 after she quit Starfleet in protest at the dismantling of the its Borg taskforce.
The Jellyfish, a craft designed for the institute by Geordi La Forge, is successfuly launched in 2387. It is equipped with trans-metaphasic shielding designed to withstand conditions that would destroy most other ships. It is subsequently used by Spock to counter the Hobus supernova.
