The interior edge of a Dyson Sphere
A Dyson Sphere was a colossal sphere constructed around a star, completely surrounding it. The interior of the sphere would absorb the entire energy output of that star, allowing for lifeforms to live on the interior surface almost indefinitely. Such a structure was theorized by the 20th century physicist Freeman Dyson.
In Star Trek Online, there are four known Dyson spheres, all constructed by the Iconians or their servitors;
- The Jenolan Dyson Sphere was discovered by the USS Jenolan in 2294. By 2410 this was still being surveyed by the U.S.S. Gold when it was remotely jumped to the Delta Quadrant. It was claimed by the Federation, but was eventually run by the Alliance. ( “A Step Between Stars”)
- The Solanae Dyson Sphere was used by the Solanae and located on the border of the Delta and Beta Quadrants. It is contested by the Alliance's Dyson Sphere Joint Command and the Voth. (Solanae Dyson Sphere Episode Arc)
- The Andromeda Dyson Sphere was discovered by an Alliance team including Sela. It was originally located in the Andromeda Galaxy before jumping to the Iconia System. ( “Uneasy Allies”)
- The Herald Sphere, which is much smaller and without a sun, but still described as a Dyson sphere. ( “The Herald Sphere”)
The Jenolan and Solanae spheres are accessed via the Dyson Sphere Gateway in the Azure Sector.
