The Klingon Defense Force is the military arm of the Klingon Empire. They are sometimes referred to as the Imperial Klingon Defense Force or abbreviated to simply KDF. Klingon Defense Force vessels typically carry an "I.K.S." prefix.

-In Game: the Klingon Defense Force is the second faction introduced to Star Trek Online, and stands second only to [[Player versus Player]] activity in terms of developer hostility and neglect, including a 3 year period after release in which no development activity occurred whatsoever, and a continuing reluctance and passive hostility from Lead Developer Al "CaptainGeko" Rivera, who celebrated no longer "Being forced to develop..." For this faction after PvP queues were made cross-faction in 2014.  Subsequent demonsrations of this attitude include the [[Delta Rising Operations Pack]], which included 6 Federation vessels with mutually supporting mastery traits vs. 2 Klingon ships of average-to-poor stats with orphaned, non-supporting or non-useable-at-release mastery traits.  (Overwhelming Force took three months after Holodeck release to begin working as described in the tooltip.)
-Scoreboards in [[Capture and Hold]] and [[Arena]] still do not reliably track KDF players participating in those activities more than a year after the scoreboard bug caused by Delta Rising's release hit (this may be attributed to the lack of Developer involvement in either KDF, or PvP, play.)
-Much like with PvP, players posting to the Klingon Defense Force boards will be brushed off or ignored by developer staff, and their concerns will be treated with only a narrow margin of seriousness slightly greater than PvP players recieve.
-Cryptic Statistics:
-KDF (Klingon Defense Force) characters comprised 16% of all characters or 'Captains' generated in the game according to Cryptic Studios' published statistics as of 2015.  This is down from an 18% average in the previous statistics released by the developers in 2012.  Some of this may be attributed to the release of [[Legacy of Romulus]] (Romulans comprising 11% of Captains).
-Vessel Types in-game include:
-[[Raiders]], specifically the Klingon Bird of Prey series
-[[Raptors]], an Escort subtype with generally poor turn rates and bugged animations, lower shield levels and 'non-battle' cloaking.
-[[Battle-Cruisers]], A vessel subtype analogous to Cruisers, Battlecruisers may mount dual cannons, and Klingon models may cloak.  This type has steadily seen a shift to Lockboxed "Special Event" versions that are cross-faction, and the Federation recieved an improved version of the same concept with the [[Avenger]].
-[[Carriers]] This type originated with KDF, but has been steadily shifted to [[Starfleet]], with the latest version being a Federation or Starfleet exclusive, Tier six vessel released without a KDF equivalent.  (a KDF equivalent is unlikely in the future.)
-[[Flight Deck Cruiser]]: With the Tier Six Command ships, this type ceased to be a KDF type, becoming common across all three factions.
-[[Science Ships]]; the Gorn science vessels are statistically reduced versions of 'free' Federation science vessels, but with up to a 2500 zen price tag.  Per the statement of Lead Developer Al Rivera, "We've sold dozens."  The Dyson science destroyer series are a stat-copy of Federation equivalents, and are widely considered the best Science vessel available to KDF players-while being among the worst available to Federation players.  There is no Tier 6 KDF Science vessel, and as with the Carrier situation, none is likely to be in the works for a very long time.
-Playerbase:
-The KDF playerbase is a group of people that have routinely endured insulting treatment, neglect, and at times verbal abuse by the Developer staff at Cryptic, yet remained loyal to the game and the product, and remains a friendly and close-knit community within Star Trek Online.  No doubt, efforts will continue on the part of the Lead Developer and his staff to reduce this group through the same tactics of neglect, passive-aggressive hostility, mockery, etc. etc.
