An MMORPG is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. In role-playing games, the player assumes the role of a character, controlling their actions and choices. Traditionally these were played as a table-top game and later as a single-player video game. With the advent of widespread access to the internet in the 1990s, MMORPGs began to be developed. They were distinguished by allowing large numbers of players to interact together in a persistent game world hosted by the publisher. Massively Multiplayer Online games typically have hundreds or thousands of players on the same server, interacting and cooperating or competing with each other on a large scale.
