This page is an official policy on STOWiki.

This policy has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow.

  • Feel free to propose any changes to this policy, but please make sure that changes you make follow the official process and reflect consensus on the discussion page before you put them into practice. Any big changes need to be Adopted or Decreed to be enforced as policy.
  • See Project:Policies for an overview of STOWiki policies.
  • See Category:Policies for a list of proposed and adopted policy articles.
  • Shortcut: STO:PC

The goal of a wiki is to be informative and not to allow self promotion or free advertisement. This policy outlines what is allowed, not allowed, and required when a user creates a page for a player character. Posting a page including info about a player character in an objective manner is fine, but we don't wish to encourage wikisquatters starting hundreds of player character pages on a site meant to be mostly informative.

The player character page should always be located under the author's user page on which the character is located using that character's name as it is spelled on the server. For example, User:DanPMK/Strum.

All player character pages will be required to follow these specifications.

All player character pages must contain:

  • The {{PC|<name=>|<platform=>|<faction=>|<race=>|<class=>|<wikiuser=>|<fleet=>|<handle=>}} banner tag at the top of the page.
    • The platform the character is on (PC, Playstation or Xbox).
    • The faction the player character belongs to.
    • The race and class of the player character.
    • The fleet the player character belongs to, if applicable.
  • At least three (3) sentences in English containing useful information about the player character. After these sentences, the main article may be in another language if the intended audience is non-English.

The information here is allowed and encouraged in order to create an informative player character page:

  • A screenshot of the player character and their starship. Please use the JPEG image format for a reasonable filesize.
  • Stats about your character, such as skill, trait, and equipment loadouts; specialization selection; accolades; story, R&D, reputation, and endeavor progress; known crafting recipes; bridge officers; duty officers; admiralty; owned uniforms, pets and starships.
  • Your style of play on that character.
  • Future plans for your character.
  • Information about the fleet the character is in, particularly if that character is the owner or leader of said fleet.
  • The history of your character from an out-of-game perspective, such as when and why the character was created, when and why the character joined and left various fleets, etc.
  • Fanfiction related to your character, starship, officers, and fleet, such as fictional/RP history and short stories.

This is not necessarily a complete list. We do not mind you publishing other information that is useful or interesting to others, but those should illustrate the gist of it. Pages on the STO Wiki are there for the visitors!

Not allowed[]

Posting the following types of information will result in your player character page being edited or deleted:

  • Any content that violates the rules of Star Trek Online, the Star Trek Online Wiki, or Fandom.
  • "Drama" between players or groups of players. We all know it when we see it.
  • Biased information: The content on a Wiki is meant to be informative; this includes player character pages. Player character pages, like all others, should be written from a neutral point of view and must follow the Neutral Point of View Policy.
  • In general terms: don't put any material on the page that requires it to be updated frequently, or is only meant for the player.

The player character page should also be properly categorized:

  • [[Category:Player characters (platform)]] - Automatically added by {{PC}} banner tag.

Enforcing the policy[]

  • A page containing disallowed content can be edited to comply, or you can mark it with {{Violation/PC}}, which places it in Category:Pages with possible policy violations for someone else to fix.
  • Users that insist on having or consistently add information on their player character page that is not allowed, or revert improvements or interfere with others' player character pages, will be considered vandals and appropriate action will be taken.

Please remember that the Star Trek Online Wiki is a place where users go to obtain information about Star Trek Online, not get spammed with useless information. Player characters are certainly a large part of Star Trek Online and can be represented here, but they must follow the proper criteria and not participate in spewing useless, biased information or wikisquatting (making a wiki article that is solely for your own use, or the use of a group you associate with). Your target audience is not yourself; it is people interested in STO. Your player character page should reflect this!
