A helpful suggestion to people who use this wiki alot[]

Ive noticed there is no link on the front page to the "lore" page, or i am not seeing it. What will be very helpful would be a link to this page as i looked before for it on this wiki, but i never found info on it until my fleet posted the actual webpage link in the wiki for it in the mumble chat we have in the fleet i am in. I would and i imagine other people would find a link to the "lore" page very helpful for answering those lore questions. Thanks for reading in advanced!

Information about the malware warning[]

moved from the sitenotice:

Earlier today Curse was notified by Google that there was a script known to be malicious being served though some of our sites. Upon further inspection Curse has determined the script was being served through ad placements from a 3rd party. These ads were being served as they normally would; however, due to a security breach at the 3rd party, a malicious JS was being served that was put in their passback system.

We have managed to identify the 3rd party, who is well known to be trusted, as the source of the script. They have been contacted about the compromise and have removed the malicious script being served to not only Curse, but possibly everyone with whom they work. They are still investigating the breach.

Curse takes security extremely seriously and has removed all 3rd party ad partners until the investigation is complete. We will keep you informed of the outcome of this investigation. In the meantime, we recommend you run a malware scan on your computer. You can run a free scan at We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

Well, I don't think I've ever been more thankful for AdBlock Plus. It blocked whatever ad had the malware. CPTNIce 18:48, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Misformatting of sub headings[]

the use of the === formatting leads to headings dissppearing inside a non resizable window. I use IE9 if this makes any difference

It did make a difference. Also, when I originally tested this in IE9, I didn't see the problem. I had to use IE9's zoom and text size features before the problem showed up. Apparently, IE9 wasn't resizing the headings correctly in these modes. I've tweaked the site styles and the problem disappeared on my end; you may have to use Shift-F5 to force IE to load the new styles. Hopefully, this fix works for everyone. Main Site Link[]

The link to the game's main page should be changed to It doesn't seem to be redirecting for me.

Main Page Banners[]

Somebody should replace the Season 6 banner with a new Season 7 one. The casual STOwiki user wouldn't notice the "Now Out" change unless they already knew. - Mitchz95 01:27, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Update of the Main Page[]

I've updated the Main Page (expanding universe section, season 6 banner) and also fixed an unwanted line break (non-playable ships --> NPC ships): User:Akira-sensei/sandbox If an admin could please transfer these updates :) --Akira-sensei 16:58, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Has there really been NO admin online for the past 24 hours?! :-( --Akira-sensei 15:29, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Expand section/Empty section[]

I noticed that there's no template for "expand section" tag. This is something I see used often in other wikis. It probably should be added if there isn't one already that I'm not aware of.

Problem with certain computers[]

Some people (starting on post 37) are reporting problems with the graphics when loading STOwiki on certain computers. - Mitchz95 20:28, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I think we have this fixed now. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 22:28, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Factionnav/New Romulus[]

I was wondering...since the people of New Romulus are a distinctly different faction than the enemy Romulan Star Empire encountered during the Romulan Front, does it warrant its own Template:Factionnav? - Mitchz95 04:12, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Season 7 banner improvements[]

I'd be very grateful if an Admin could copy/paste that to the Main Page :) I've uploaded two new images for the banner (the Romulan/Reman symbols look bluury and tiny) --Akira-sensei 12:23, 24 November 2012 (UTC):

That looks great, Akira! Nicely done! - Mitchz95 05:11, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Cache not purging in categories[]

I'm having problems trying to purge the cache on Category:Articles with missing icons. This category is automatically added by icon (and its redirect coloricon) if an icon is missing. Specifically, I'm looking at Assault Cruiser Refit, Chroniton Dual Beam Array, and Tholian Crystalline Sword; all used to have missing icons that have since been added.

I can purge the pages themselves (and they clearly don't have that category), but Category:Articles with missing icons still lists them. When I try to purge the category itself, I get a "the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" error. After a minute, the category reloads, but with the pages unchanged. This is on Firefox 15; Chrome has the same problems, but skips the error message. KarikaCommunicator 15:15, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

I don't know the details, but purge does not actually do all of the same things saving the page does. When it fails, you should try a "null edit;" just open the page for editing and save it with no changes. Doing this on the affected pages is working for me. User Signatures[]

Hi guys,

I've made my own personal Sig for talk pages and here is how-to if you want to make one also.

  • Short Version:
Make a page called
  • On that page you put this for example (replace all "YourUserName"):

<span style="color: #999999;">—</span> <small>YourUserName</small>

You can alter it as you want ofcourse, but please read through the whole original Signature guide linked below.

  • Go to your Preferences, and look at the "User Profile" tab.
In the "Signature" edit box, put and tick "Custom signature".
  • Now you can use your custom signature as usual with ~~~~.

I made mine using Eyes sig as basic (because it looks good).
If this idea is liked I can make other/more icons like perhaps an Admin icon, please let me know what you guys think. :)

Look here for some icons already made (was more of an experiment, and those icons might get changed bit):

Note that if you wish to use the mail icon you would also have to Enable e-mail from other users under your Preferences, E-mail options.

Credits Conversion[]

(From site notice) Effective Thursday, July 12th, 2012, Cryptic Points are being converted to ZEN. If you enter an outstanding code for Cryptic Points (CP) or STO Promotional Points, these redeemed points will automatically be converted to ZEN at a rate of 80 CP:100 ZEN and will show up in your in-game balance as such. Support Cruiser Retrofit from Temporal Ambassador[]

This may seem like a simple question to ask, but would like confirmation anyway. Currently, I am a level 16 LT. Commander, and have completed the Temporal Ambassador mission. I received my award of ships, but do I have to wait until I obtain Level 20 to use it?

Thanks for the help!

Randytwood 20:24, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

You will be able to open the boxes once you reach the appropriate rank (level 20 for the standard Support Cruiser; level 40 for the limited time Support Cruiser Retrofit). You can open the boxes anytime after that; they won't disappear after the event ends. - Mitchz95 20:47, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, Mitch! Answered evrything I was thinking about~

Randytwood 21:24, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Really wish they would change the 'bound to character' property of the tier 3 Support Cruiser. At least make it transferable between characters on an account, otherwise it's worthless to players who are already at Captain or Admiral ranks. Same goes for the Kamarag battlecruiser on the KDF side. Orca19904 21:30, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Questions about the number of ships per character[]

Hi again,

I was wondering how many ships can be assigned to a character for a Silver account? I would like to buy a ship, but I believe they need to be placed in a "slot", and a character has only 5 levels, so does this mean only five ships per character? Does the type of account (Gold vs Silver) affect this?

I tried the search function for this one, but maybe I am trying to be too specific with the request for it to work.

Thanks for the help!

Randytwood 22:24, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

See Ship slot. I believe it could an additional ship slot for gold but don't quote me on that. Which reminds me if some would be kind enough to check the price of buying 2 additional ship slots, I believe it could be 300Zen small icon.png but you may want to check. Thanks in advance Hello191 (Talk) User-Hello191-Sig.png 16:55, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. Yes there is a fixed number of ship slots per character, but additional slots can be added by buying slots from the C-Store, or converting dilithium to Zen from the Exchange. This is allowed to Silver Memners, as I am one and now have 8 ships for my Tactical character. Again, Thank you for the answer!

bridge officer deleted[]

i would like to know why the bridge officers get deleted everytime someone changes to a new screen and can't put them back on unless they go into there bridge and add them back to there stations. this has been very annoying when you enter combat and your boff's are not in there stations and you are running a standard ship with no help from the officers you put on in there stations. if you can email me back a way to get rid of this BUG it would be very much appreciated.

your friend michael-john mcaulay

p.s. i enjoy the game and hope you come up with new ships and items for ships asap.

This is a terribly annoying situation to have, and you are not alone, myself (and many others) have had this same problem. However, most recently after completing the mission Temporal Ambassador. STO have yet to release a fix but in the mean time I advise you to check your bridge officer stations before and after completing missions, changing screens etc including changing ships. Hope this helps, sorry for no true fix.Hello191 (Talk) User-Hello191-Sig.png 16:32, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

I do not know if this helps, but have noticed that BOFFS ability levels and there current rank CAN affect whether or not they show up in a bridge slot. For instance, when I get a new ship, I need to add the BOFFS again. And is the new ship requires a higher rank in the slot than is currently available, I cannot add them until i promote them. Is this the case you are describing? Or is it that they were in the slots on a ship and the disappeared from the same ship when you chnged your screen?

How do I create a new template?[]

I proposed a new template for Abilities over in the Suggestion box. It doesn't seem to be getting noticed, but I think it's a good idea. So, I want to make the template myself. How would I proceed? CPTNIce 07:15, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

I didn't studied your suggestion nor the ability pages to see if needs improvments (just came back after 2 months break from Wiki to practice my hobby with 3D Art and a small vacation:)).Now since im back i need to remember how to work with wiki and continue my started projects and i might not have yet plenty time to involve into a new big project to stowiki but at least i can tell you that on my user page you can find some very useful links to the Mediawiki. Also if you get lost into advanced coding , you should visit my contribution page and select from the drop down box , "Template" and you will see lots of template edits/improvements, creating new templates by me.On the wiki there are lots of templates already created for different purposes , you should create your own testing page, Username/Sandbox or use the Sandbox page from wiki (there you might have higher chances to get improved your tested template) and feel free to follow my work , copy a template and paste it on your sandbox page and edit that to change values or titles/words.Easiest template is to make a text as a template to be displayed on multiple pages such as item info (example : my holo emitter template).Templates are very useful and if used on more than 2 pages then definitly will save storage space on wiki server also your spent time to retype the text again.Don't forget to use Show preview button if you edit a page to see how it looks or to save your work if you work on your sandbox page. From what i saw on suggestion box about how should look like your template for ability page i think the ships vs. another ship templates (example: see breen chel grett ship vs. similar ships comparison) or infoboxes will fit (for vertical tables) but its just a suggestion.

Report of STOwiki blocked by antivirus program[]

It was brought to my attention that at least one user was being intermittently blocked on Firefox (and the Raptr browser) from visiting STOwiki due to the ads on the website being classified as malware by his Avast antivirus program. He was able to use a workaround by disabling javascript and images in his browser settings. This issue is not unique to STOwiki. Perhaps our friends at Curse can offer some suggestions? --MatthewM 14:32, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

I've sent word up to get the issue investigated. Meanwhile, if anyone else is experiencing any malware warnings, please pass on as much information as you can. It'll be hard to track down any issue from a single report. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 02:42, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Definition of a Critical Hit[]

Hi again,

I was wondering if someone could explain what is meant by a critical hit? I am looking for a mathamatical description. For instance, i know that Antiproton bema array have a natural +20 Critical Severity bounus, but it is only applied if a critical hit is made. So what are the cahnces that a Critical Hit is made? Is is like the Proc for other types of Beam Arrays @ 2.5%?

Thank you

Woodtrandy 16:54, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Woodtrandy. While hitting/slaying a monster/boss/ship/car on any games offline or online there is a chance (if the game devs. created one) to critically hit. I don't know exactly ,also this may vary from game to game, but a critical hit may be the multiplied value with 2 or 3 of a normal hit (Example : normal hit=2000 then a critical hit value may be ~6000 or even 7000).Yes, the antiproton proc adds additional +2% chance to deal the critical hit 7000.On STO for space there are consoles which helps with critical chance (assimilated console, the temporal console from lobi store,...), for ground (ferasan grass, gambling device from lobi store,..). Critical Severity increases that Critical Hit value ,let's say +30% Critical Severity, the value from 7000 turns into 9100 (7000*30%=2,100 and 7000+2100=9100) if a booster is used such as a console/weapon adds(procs)/potions/foods.Hope i'm not wrong :) Cris333 16:21, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, Cris333 for that explaination. This is what I thought it meant, but was not sure. I appreciate the help!

Wiki skin[]

Are we going to update the colors (I think the last time we upgraded here you guys did an excellent job so it's just down to color scheme) of the skin, to coincide with the multi-color LCARS that's coming with the Legacy of Romulus expansion? Rayfire User-FED-Sig.png 21:10, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

I have a couple high-priority projects consuming most of my time, but if I get a decent opening, I'll work on a mockup to present to the community. Hopefully, it'll be early enough to give the community some time to comment before the expansion launches, but no promises. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 22:39, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
No worries. I was just wondering if anyone was interested in doing it at all. Rayfire User-FED-Sig.png 01:16, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Given that every season so far the wiki had to struggle with the amount of changed information and given that the expansion so far puts even more work on the editors table I think a new colour scheme for the wiki is the last thing we should bother Eyes with. If someone else is able and willing, fine by me. But I assume the 'please fix this, can you help with that' queries will increase soon. --Dukedom 09:52, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Ask Cryptics?[]

I've seen that you have pages for Release notes and Engineering reports, so I recently created a page for Developer Blogs. I was thinking about creating a new page to index all of the Ask Cryptic posts. Before doing so I wanted to ask what the community thinks about this. Good idea or not? Gamepedia merge[]

I apologize for the late notice on this to everyone. I was expecting more warning on the date we would be scheduled for this merge.

To minimize problems with the merge process, I suggest:

  • If you already have an account at, double-check to see if its email address matches the email address for your wiki account.
  • If not, you can try to secure a more desirable username by creating an account before the merge and ensuring it has the same email address as your wiki account. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 23:47, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Adding a few quick advisories:
  • The Semantic MediaWiki data will start a rebuilding process after the merge. Certain sections like ship types, duty officers, and traits will have missing information until the rebuild processes their data, so don't worry, this will resolve over time.
  • Similarly, search suggestions may not work much at all after the move, but this for a similar reason as above. We'll be using a new search extension, SphinxSearch, after the merge, and it'll do better as it gets the content indexed.
  • The merge process in general will likely slow things down for a while and may sometimes cause the wiki cache to be slow to refresh.
  • And the skin may need some adjustments.
  • One final note: the personal toolbar gets moved into a hover menu at the right of a new bar that will appear at the top of the screen. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 12:10, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Season Eight: Legacy of Romulus[]

I was working to create a Season Eight page for the new expansion, but it seems there is already another page for it under Legacy of Romulus. The page I was working on was deleted with a statement that there is no Season Eight. With all due respect, Season Eight is Legacy of Romulus, as referred by Dan Stahl in and the page created should reflect that. I petition that Legacy of Romulus page be renamed or moved to a new page titled Season Eight: Legacy of Romulus, continuing the page arc from Season Seven: New Romulus. - Xean

He made clear many times after that he and the team don't call it Season 8. LoR is an expansion, which is bigger than a season. - Mitchz95 (talk) 03:10, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
Confirmed. In fact DStahl has specifically stated that Season 8 proper will be released around the fall. Each prior season was highlighted in game as being a season. The Season number then title, Genesis, Crossfire, New Romulus. This isn't a season. Rayfire User-FED-Sig.png 03:18, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
Actually I can give a specific. It was Season 8, but it outgrew it. This interview explains it. Rayfire User-FED-Sig.png 03:29, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
Alright, that clears up the confusion, thanks for posting! A couple of questions: I am considering bring and maintain stowiki up to date. I have the time and resources for it, but I'd like to know A) would I get any admin abilities to help me doing it and B) are there things admins or the guys in charge here prefer not touched? Better that I know now rather than waste time later. I understand established enterprises like this have their power echelons, I wouldn't want to jump in where I'm not welcome.
Giving you administrator privileges might be a bit premature; just ask if you need something special done and we (myself and the other admins) will see what we can do. As for things we don't want touched, just read over STOwiki's guidelines and policies and you should be fine. Discussion of an article and its content/layout/etc can be done on its talk page (look for "Discussion" at the top). And remember to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). That's pretty much it; I look forward to seeing your contributions! - Mitchz95 (talk) 16:48, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Minor Main Page revamp[]

I suggest merging the two seperate boxes "Beginner's Section" and "Player Guides" into the Quicklinks section "Basics". Three links (Guide: Shields, Guide: Skills, and Guide: Suggested trait builds) are out of date and need a major revamp. Therefore they should not be linked on the Main Page. Instead, I propose to add another Quicklinks section called "Endgame content". Here I'd list things like Reputation System, Duty Officer System, Adventure zone, Player versus Player, Fleet Advancement System. In order to compensate for the change in space, we could move the "Did you know...?" box in the right column. I also fail to see the reason behind a "The Expanding Universe" Quicklink section - It just copy/pastes our banners... --Akirasensei (talk) 19:06, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Here's my proposal: Main Page/editcopy - Of course we'd need someone to set up a random featured image selector. I could quickly mark ~20 excellent images/graphs/infographics with a featured template if needed. --Akirasensei (talk) 21:07, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
A caption for the featured images would be nice, though I know that might be difficult to set up for randomly selected ones. Overall, I think I like it. :) - Mitchz95 (talk) 22:13, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
Ok, based on the "Did You Know...?" template, I've implemented a Featured Media template which automatically chooses some neat images that I've compiled in a list. If someone better than me could alter the template so that the image captions are displayed centered below the picture but without using the 'thumb' command :) --Akirasensei (talk) 23:33, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. --PhyrexianHero (talk) 09:58, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Featured Image - basic guidelines[]

Although I do not think we should get too restrictive with respect to what should be included in our Featured Image-list, I do think any in-game screenshot should be in maximum graphic settings. Currently, there a few images in there which do not present the game in its best light (which is supposed to be the purpose behind a Featured Image :) ). As I wil not have the opportunity to get in-game for the time being, perhaps other users could improve those few screenshots? --Akirasensei (talk) 17:55, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

New Console Icons[]

Cryptic's latest STO update includes an icon overhaul for all of the science, engineering, and tactical consoles; perhaps someone should take the time to splice in the new icons where they need to go... 23:57, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

I added a bunch of them this weekend. I think I got most of them if you find one missing or wrong let me know. Asanad (talk) 01:11, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Adding Videos[]

I was wondering what the best way to go about adding videos to webpages. I ask because, as a big minecraft fan, I've always found the block or mod breakdown videos very helpful and they're always a few videos under each section. As someone who loves Star Trek, I've started making ad-free videos (meaning I make no money off of them, nor do I intend to) where I am planning on doing 3-5 minute videos explaining concepts and ships from the game. I have recently tried to add my Federation Light Cruiser video to the apporpriate page, but am unable to find the right way to do this. I looked through the archive section and didn't see any answer to my question, nor anything saying not to do this in the guidelines, so I am curios. Is this something that isn't allowed/frowned upon, or am I just not seeing what I need to see? Iwishiknew (talk) 12:13, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

As far as I know, it is currently not possible to upload videos directly to Memory Alpha. However, as a workaround, you can add a link to your Youtube videos under the "External links" section of an article. Alternatively, you could create a special "Guides" section and/or also add the link on a mission-walktrough page. On Mission: New Romulus: Warehouse for instance, I have added a link to a Youtube playthrough video in the External links section. --Akirasensei (talk) 13:16, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks. Made it quick and simple and look nice, with out intruding on the page too much. I added and will be adding more stuff later. Iwishiknew (talk) 15:00, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Can someone who's savvy with templates add an option for adding in Warp Cores/Singularities to the Standard Configuration table? (shipequip) template. Xaionik (talk) 06:53, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

I've added warp cores let me know if there are any problems Asanad (talk) 15:37, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
I didn't expect it to be seperated from the "Equipment" part of the standard layout. But this should work out better for specifying unique cores on default configurations of future ships. Thank you very much! Xaionik (talk) 02:53, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
It's a bit late now I guess, but I was just playing with an alternate version of the template in my sandbox. I realised I could use a semantic query to determine the type of core (Matter or Singularity) and then add it to the equipment list by default (much like the template already does with the other standard equipment). This will save changing all the remaining ship pages, though a lot have already been done. Tahno (talk) 07:11, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
I like it. All ships have warp cores so this is a better way to do it. Asanad (talk) 17:09, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Formatting issues on some pages[]

Recently I've noticed a lot of pages with formatting issues... text flowing up the right hand side instead of below a table, etc. Often the first thought is to add clear above the text to force it back to where it should be.

Discussing it with oOEyes, he discovered that the problem is due to an 'align=' tag in the top row of the table definition immediately above the text, usually in an attempt to force the entire table to the left of the page, but that is the default anyway. The align tag is deprecated and in this case, is messing with the CSS. It's always been broken, but we're only noticing it now, after a recent upgrade to the MediaWiki software.

This note is just a heads up. If you happen to spot a formatting problem and there are tables above it, just remove the 'align=' tag from the top of the table definition (it's fine on the rows) rather than resorting to clear or <br/> tags. That will fix it without adding extra code to the page. Tahno (talk) 19:20, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the info! --Akirasensei (talk) 19:50, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Updated infobox CSS proposal[]

I've created an update for the CSS for infobox to better resemble the infobox in-game. You can see it here (copy the code to Special:MyPage/common.css). I wanted to get some opinions on this first, though (and, ultimately, have an admin to copy it to MediaWiki:Common.css). KarikaCommunicator 17:16, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Editing pages goes to blank page or timeout[]

I think since the most recent site update, I have been experiencing some difficulties in submitting page edits properly. When I click the "Save page" button, the page will lag for ~30 seconds before doing one of two things:

  1. The page will simply go blank. Refreshing the page will reset the editing page without any of the new info in it, and viewing the page normally shows no changes.
  2. The page will present a "504 Gateway Timeout". Sometimes in this instance, going to view the page normally will show that the new info I added somehow updated the page.

I am at a loss for how to address this issue, so any insight would be appreciated. Thanks. --MrTylerMaxwell (talk) 18:19, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Is this something happening on specific pages? On longer or more complicated pages, it may be the save process is taking long enough for the web request to time out. In this case, breaking up or simplifying the pages is the solution. Otherwise, I'll send this report up for further investigation. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 19:54, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
I've mostly been trying to add content to specific sections of the page of special duty officers, which indeed is quite long by now. However I also added image references to a few individual duty officer pages which are quite small, yet I encountered the same problems. --MrTylerMaxwell (talk) 15:48, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
It's not just about being short or long. Individual duty officer pages do run through a fairly complex template, so if this issue is only related to saving pages that need heavy processing, I'll need to look at trying to streamline that template, and the community will need to look at an alternative approach to the special duty officers page. So, is there anywhere else you're encountering this issue? oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 23:21, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
I did some edits to a few non-DOff related pages (I suppose this page counts as well); these page edits saved just fine, confirming your suspicion that the complexity of the duty officer pages is the culprit behind my editing problems. Guess that means some changes to the special duty officer are in order. Any suggestions? --MrTylerMaxwell (talk) 18:04, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
The listing is already broken down by difficulty in attaining. Perhaps one of the first things to try is just to break it up into multiple pages by that. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 21:16, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
I already suggested that on its talk page. However my original assessments of the difficulty might need some adjustments. -Dukedom (talk) 10:34, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me figure out why I am not able to commission a new engineering officer. I have two engineering bridge officer candidates and one open station for an ensign engineering bridge officer (on my main ship) but when I go to commission one of them, it says "There are no available stations on (my shuttle craft)...It won't let me assign an officer to my main ship. Any advice or suggestions?

Newb editor, needs verification[]

Hi! I'm relatively new to the editing world here (although I have been editing here before). I recently created a new page, seeing as there was no existing page. -->> Galaxy_Cruiser_Set I also made sure to have links pointing to it (ie, the Equipment Sets template). I just need someone to go check it out and verify that everything I did is following the STOWiki guidelines, please and thanks. :) stardestroyer001

Issue with Duty Officers Completing Assignments[]

Hi. I didn't see any posts on this issue that I'm having so I wanted to create a topic to see if anyone can help me.

I have bought several (more than five) duty officers from the Exchange only to find that they cannot be used for completing the assignments I bought them for nor can they be put onto active space duty. I don't think the issue is caused by my having too many duty officers as I only have 73 and, having had the thought that this possibly was the cause, I have dismissed 10 or so of the duty officers I had on my roster previously.

This is very disturbing for me as I am purchasing these officers to accomplish specific tasks to boost specific abilities (e.g. weapons targeting, turn ratio, etc.) and spending considerable amounts of EC to get them only to have them not work for me.

Has anyone had and/or is still having this issue? Can anyone tell me how I can fix this?

Why can't I add new bridge officers[]

Whenever I have the opportunity to add a new bridge officer (purchased or sent from Starfleet) I am told there is no more room on my ship. I only have 5 bridge officers total, the wiki says you can have up to 54. What am I missing?----Mitch 6/27/14

Reputation trait icon on sto.gamepedia not showing[]

Miniature icon for Trait: Empathic Adaptation in Trait page, "Reputation traits" section is not showing and I don't know where is the problem. Could anyone help me? Thanks

Koba44, is the icon still not showing for you? It seems to work fine for me, but someone may have just updated/uploaded it in the last couple days. (Sign your comments with --~~~~) --LordTrekie (talk)

I picked up a few Prototype Plans and tried to research how they are used. I learned you need to get an assignment from the Engineer itself, not from the Duty Officer Assignments, but looking at my Engineer, I see nowhere this can be done. Do you have to be a certain level? Am I looking at the wrong officer? (I'm looking at the main Engineer on my ship.) Am I looking in the wrong place? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Homepage styling issues IE 11[]

Anyone else seeing massive styling problems on IE 11? The left-nav is in place but content meant to be right of the left nav is bumped down below the end of the left-nav.

That was surprisingly painful, but it looks like I've managed to iron out the cross browser differences in positioning the sidebar brought on by the recent upgrade. It now seems to render consistently on my end, at least. Please feel free to report any other IE issues you may notice. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 09:23, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Rarity Update[]

I had a brief look into the coding of the rarity levels, but as there are no comments in the code, I'll rather ask here, if someone is able to update "gold", so it accepts and displays the in-game description "Epic". This preferably without breaking the current entries, that use "Unique"... --Danimb (talk) 16:51, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Epic is now recognised as a valid rarity, and should work in items and their associated infoboxes. As I get some time I'll check other places and make sure it works there too. I'll update existing items as time permits to fix the ones currently marked Unique. --Tahno (talk) 05:15, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
I've also done this in a couple of other places, mainly duty officer related --LordTrekie (talk) 04:32, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

ParserPower installed[]

I noticed during my bot resaves to help recache after the partial database rebuild that the trait tables were timing out. I refactored them so they could save a lot faster. To help, I installed an extension called ParserPower that contains a lot of parser functions to help deal with lists of information, among a few other features. If anyone else is curious about using it, the documentation can be found on our help wiki here. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 01:04, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Playable Starship Template Update in progress[]

I just wanted to let everyone know that Im currently working on updating the Shiptypeinfo template used on playable starship pages (Such as the new Command Battle Cruisers). Most of the template is done, but I still need to create/update a bunch of icons that the template uses which will take a few more days due to a heavy college workload at the moment. I would like to use the new Command Battle Cruisers to showcase these changes, including command/intelligence boff seating, and other improvements. I'll make another note here once its 'Live'. --Tahno (talk) 03:27, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Icon Display[]

I have just created the Kobali Regenerative Circuitry set page, and for the life of me cannot get the images to show where they should be for each of the items. The files are uploaded to the page. Can someone give me a pointer? Feel free to fix if you wish, just leave me the instructions. Thank you.

In your specific case what you needed to do was name, for example, the file 'Kobali Hyper-Impulse Engines.png' to Kobali Hyper-Impulse Engines Mk XII icon.png' The icon.png is used on all image icons and the Mk because in this case that is what was being called on the set page. Complete overhaul of Bridge Officer article(s)[]

Hi there,

Recently, I've been updating and cleaning up several articles pertaining to skills, abilities, ranks, and traits. I've also uploaded a whole bunch of updated ability icons, but there are still plenty outdated ones... Now I'd like to request help for overhauling/cleaning up/updating the Bridge Officer article. It needs well formatted info on Training Manuals, the new BOff abilities/skill system, and BOff specializations, including some good UI screenies (Note that I've already uploaded File:Away team.png and File:Choose your away team.png, but they are not used of the BOff article yet). All in all, I could use all the help I can get :)--Akirasensei (talk) 22:46, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Looks like this is going to be a big job. The bridge officer article is pretty unwieldy right now; I would suggest cutting its length to a brief description of what a bridge officer does and generally how to acquire them. I think Special bridge officers, covering the tutorial boffs, C-Store boffs, and mission reward boffs, could have their own article. That might be a good start to making the whole thing more readable. What do you think? Jeffel82 (talk) 02:04, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, sounds good. At least ~80% of the current article are useless or outdated. I'd say the following topics should definitely be discussed on the Bridge Officer article:

  • Basic definition of what BOffs are (pets in ground combat; ability-sets in space combat)
  • Basic run-down of what parameters BOffs have
    • Abilities: Gained from Training Manuals, available pool is determined by department/career path + specialization
      • Rank of abilities: Unlocked by higher BOff ranks
    • Traits: Determined by quality/rarity + race
    • Gender has no effect etc.
  • Run-down of the BOff UI (ship stations menu; away team controls - File:Away team.png and File:Choose your away team.png)
  • How to obtain BOffs (at which levels are they rewarded (I recently revamped&updated the rank-rewards table); which missions/reputations reward them; who "sells" them)

Things that should be/remain outsourced are Bridge officer and kit abilities, Bridge Officer traits, and a list of any special BOffs (missions/reputation rewards; storyline BOffs, e.g., Tovan Khev etc.). As for Training Manuals: There are three options: 1) Include them into the Bridge Officer article as seperate section, 2) include them into the Bridge officer and kit abilities, 3) create a seperate article. I personally tend to vote for #3. --Akirasensei (talk) 12:12, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

I've taken a hatchet to the main Bridge Officer article, and moved Special bridge officers to their own article. I tried to cut down on the amount of rambling and meta-conversation about boffs (such as discussion about which careers are best on Away Teams), but it's possible someone will want to restore some of it. I also tried to resequence the sections into a logical order. Jeffel82 (talk) 18:56, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

T5U upgrades[]

Its been a while since I've been here so maybe I've missed it but is there anywhere on this wiki that shows the T5U upgrades? Asanad (talk) 05:35, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Merging Fleet ship pages[]

With the sheer number of ships in the game, and the small differences between normal, T5-U, Fleet, and Fleet T5-U, I think it's time we consider merging the Fleet ship pages into the pages for the non-fleet versions of the ship, so that one page can cover all 2/3/4 versions of the ship, with T5-U information in one place for T5 and Fleet T5 ships. I think this can be done in a way that keeps all the information clear: I've made an example page merging the Dreadnought Cruiser and Fleet Dreadnought Cruiser pages, which can be found on this page. Do you all think it's a good idea? DanPMK (talk) 20:37, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

The problem with this is that Zutty added semantic properties to ships, which are used to generate the automated tables. It's all set up with the idea of one ship per page, and in previewing your example, I can see big problems in the property values, such as having two different types, because it's trying to merge the data for both ships into one. It's not that easy a problem to fix; we'd either have to switch back to manual methods for the tables, or update the ship infoboxes to use subobjects, which are a fair bit more of a pain to work with. It would also be problematic if we are or ever want to have tooltips for ships in the future.
Also, Zutty hasn't been around for a long time. I'm probably the only editor around that could make the needed changes (either way), and I'm honestly not sure when I'd have time to get to it. Also, the example page will probably be pulled into the automated lists as well unless you remove the infoboxes. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 21:01, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
My concern is making a good wiki; this is not and should not be a database. If we want to source data for tables, we should be using a spreadsheet, a database table or something else. DanPMK (talk) 21:15, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Or rather, if we want the source to be on-wiki, we should have a single dedicated page/template to read from, not having it spread out on a thousand different pages. Having the pages provide info for any sort of database is kinda backwards. If anything, we could collate all the data on one page, and use that to source the infoboxes. DanPMK (talk) 21:21, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Hunh? Collating all the data on one page? The only likely result of that is a timeout on saving such a page; I've already beat my head against the wall with that with duty officers. And I'm talking about what happens to the tables we already have in place, such as on Federation playable starship. Switch over to multiple infoboxes on the same page right now, those tables will break.
I really wasn't trying to make any comment on the desirability of doing this, but on what has to happen for this to work: either replacing those with something manually edited or switching the infoboxes to use subobjects (which does have a [hopefully small] risk of backfiring by making those longer pages more likely to timeout on saves).
But because of the possibility of timeouts, and because there's no good way to know when a page is getting long enough and complex enough for this to happen until it does, I would be a little concerned about the future implications of this. Sometimes the "better" organizational structure has to bow to technical constraints, and delivering large pages which contain more information than a user is asking for isn't necessarily better anyway. If there weren't technical and coding issues here, I wouldn't have a strong opinion either way. Combined pages can be fine if appropriate redirects get set up so that specific searches still go directly to the desired content, and separate pages can be fine if there's adequate linking in a sensible organization (plus this approach doesn't need the redirects to be as search-friendly for those who know exactly what they want to find). oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 22:26, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
I guess it boils down to how useful that table ability is, especially when you have such tiny differences between a few types of ship. This did, however, give me an idea: Will the infobox information still load if the page it is on is also a redirect? I'd like to test if, say, we could have a normal infobox on Dreadnought Cruiser (i.e. unchanged), which was a merged article, and then having the Fleet infobox on Fleet Dreadnought Cruiser, but that page is also a redirect. Think I should attempt that? If that works, we can use that as an effective shortcut by having a ton of Fleet and T5-U information 'hidden' behind redirects. DanPMK (talk) 03:01, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Scratch that, when the table is hidden, the parser cannot see it. How about a soft redirect, then? This will allow all the stats to remain on those pages, and prompt the user to go to one article. Here is an example: Dreadnought Cruiser (T5-U). DanPMK (talk) 03:24, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Would it not be simpler just to add a T5U section on each page? Similar to what you did on ur original Dreadnought Cruiser example page? You could make a mastery template to speed up implementation. Though that wouldn't add the T5U stats to the tables eyes is referring to but it would at least get the information on the wiki. I was surprised when I returned to find there is no information, that I can find, on any T5U upgrades on the wiki. Asanad (talk) 04:30, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes, don't get me wrong, I'll elaborate: my current suggestion is that there will be a single page that covers T5, T5-U, Fleet, and Fleet T5-U. Since the infoboxes provide information to the parser, there will still be an otherwise empty page, such as Dreadnought Cruiser (T5-U), that will have the infobox, but no other information. In this scenario, Fleet Dreadnought Cruiser, Dreadnought Cruiser (T5-U), and Fleet Dreadnought Cruiser (T5-U) would all be soft redirects to Dreadnought Cruiser. If you guys disagree with that, then we'd keep the Fleet pages separate and I'd just start adding T5-U information to them. I'll let democracy decide :P DanPMK (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
I'm all for reducing clutter on the ship nav, and I think merging the pages together makes sense for the most part. But I'm not really an expert on the technical limitations of the wiki, so I'm not sure I can make an informed decision here. Could we merge them into two articles (base and T5-U, and Fleet and Fleet T5-U) instead? - Mitchz95 (talk) 16:50, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

If that's what you guys think is best. I only want to merge them because you can explain the differences between all 4 variants in one section, really. And when it comes to the stats, the differences are always the same for a fleet ship (only need to know the console) and the T5-U (console and mastery package). Take for example the info I added to the Avenger page: it has all the info you need, sans the fleet ship cost, which would be added if we only used one article.

So we can keep it the way it is now, with 2 articles, it just makes the two articles share 90% of their text, which seems unnecessary to me. Maybe if the parser had flags for "fleet version exists", "fleet version adds this console", "T5-U adds this console" and so forth, we wouldn't even need infoboxes for the fleet ones. But I don't know how much work that would be. For now, I'm just going to work on adding the section like the Avenger class page has to all the pages, since T5-U information is lacking regardless, and those certainly won't be getting their own pages. DanPMK (talk) 01:48, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

It might make more sense in this case to come to a consensus first on what we want the tables to show. If the differences are minimal enough, might not be worth showing fleet versions in those anyway. Alternatively, we could try squeezing the different configurations in a single entry somehow, but I think that would be difficult to achieve visually. In either of those cases, modifying the infobox becomes a fair bit easier because we don't have to add anything that affects the tables (or at least it's just adding more properties), and we can combine into one page because it sounds like this will keep the articles rather short. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 04:28, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
I'd say the current abilities of the tables are something we do want to keep. As Akira says below, Cryptic is only going to be adding more ships, and so while it's not terribly useful to compare certain ship types in a table (such as lower tier ships, or ships of a different type), I suspect that it's a functionality that will only grow more useful in time. I do want to ask: would it be possible for the parser/template to generate ship info dynamically? If we had, say, only a single Dreadnought Cruiser page with a single infobox, would we be able to have a table with both a Dreadnought Cruiser entry (with info taken from the infobox), and a Fleet Dreadnought Cruiser entry (taking the Dreadnought Cruiser entry, and using separate info), in separate rows? Perhaps not totally dynamically--such as multiplying the hull by 1.1--but rather having the infoboxes contain all the information. The Dreadnought Cruiser infobox would have a Hull entry for its standard hull, FleetHull entry for its fleet hull, FleetConsole to specify which kind of console it gets... I need to know what is technically possible/feasible before I make a really informed suggestion, since I can't really justify getting rid of the current parser's abilities. DanPMK (talk) 04:26, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
If most values are repeated, that should be doable without having to do a whole lot of new coding or recoding the way the subobject approach, since we're still technically treating it as one ship and just adding more properties to it. The main drawback I see to this is that every time some new type of fleet ship gets added in there, similar recoding would have to be done again, with more properties added yet. That only concerns me because there are still few editors out there who understand Semantic MediaWiki (the extension used to generate those tables), where at least creating new ship pages didn't require any special knowledge beyond average wiki editing. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 07:59, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
As far as I know, there are all of three four five evidently several ships that do not follow the standard fleet formula (god dammit Cryptic....):
I thought the SV and the Norgh were the only ones, I had no idea KDF was borked even behind the scenes. I'm not sure if that list is exhaustive, but including that, we'd need, to cover every fleet ship and T5-U ship, the following added to infoboxes:
  • Fleet console
  • T5-U console
  • Fleet boff arrangement
  • If any hulls/shields do not match the 10/15/30 numbers, then Fleet and/or T5-U hulls/shields
  • A does-not-have-a-fleet-variant flag
  • A does-not-have-a-non-fleet-variant flag
  • Fleet cost (4 or 5 modules)
  • Whether fleet discount is available
Every other value (weapon slots, crew, dual cannon, devices, turn rate, impulse modifier, inertia, bonus power, innate abilities) stays the same, unless I missed any. Do you think that's doable? If it's not, then I'd go with a different suggestion. DanPMK (talk) 12:56, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
I apologize for the long delay in getting this started. I've added the needed properties and expanded the Shiptypeinfo infobox as needed. The documentation there has the new parameters listed. I was planning on making the needed table changes later tonight as well, as the wiki needs some time to catch up and update the new properties, but on further consideration, I think it's best to wait long enough for you guys to try out the new parameters first before trying to get the tables updated in case any further changes or corrections need to be made. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 01:05, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks so much for the work. DanPMK (talk) 10:14, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, I do not have the time to read through the entire discussion right now. In any case, I'll always support any plans to de-clutter the plethora of ship articles we have right now. Ships are Cryptic's main source for income, so there are gonna be many many more for the foreseeable future. We should really try to find ways to improve their representation in the wiki. --Akirasensei (talk) 20:45, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

So, did we decide against this, since they were different purchases? or some other reason? Haven't seen any movement. DanPMK (talk) 22:12, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Problem with Creating/Editing Duty Officers with the Special Form[]

I have been trying to add several new Duty Officers to the wiki using the Special Form accessible from the Community portal page. I used to be able to create and edit Duty Officer pages without issue, but on my last attempts I've been met with an error message:

"Invalid or virtual namespace -1 given."

Further attempts to create/edit Duty Officer pages with the Form result in the same message; the result is that I cannot make any new pages or edit existing ones using the Special Form. I've gone over every bit of the page info I've been adding and can't find any typos or mistakes that would result in an error message, and a quick Google search did not even provide a satisfactory explanation for what that error message even means.

Presently, I've resorted to editing and making new Duty Officer pages directly (without the Special Form) and have not had any issues, but the process is a lot more annoying without all of the options available on the Form. I'm wondering if some recent change to the wiki may have inadvertently broken the Form function, and if there is a way to repair it. Thanks. --MrTylerMaxwell (talk) 19:15, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

This issue has been reported on another wiki already, and our dev team is already investigating it. I apologize for the inconvenience. I hope we'll have the problem identified and fixed soon. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 20:13, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. While were on the subject of the Duty Officer Form, it needs some more selection options for the newer Duty Officers that STO has put out: the Duty Officer pages currently do not recognize the "Epic" and "Ultra Rare" Quality, nor the "Other" Gender options. --MrTylerMaxwell (talk) 20:55, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Redirects for purposes of Infobox hover functionality[]

What is the general consensus on how to handle hover-infoboxes in the case of set pages? Should we use redirect links in order to allow hover functionality even with set items, or should we keep the wiki as redirect-free as possible? Alph4Numb3r (talk) 12:34, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

I believe the added functionality of the tooltips is the way to go. Asanad (talk) 22:15, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

Ultra-rare Doffs[]

Could we please add UR to the DOFF form so we can update the wiki with the new Xindi UR doffs?

Also, is it possible to list the actual doff abilities, rather than "1,2,3,4,5, SP" ? It's very difficult to tell which is the appropriate selection. Thanks!

Goofysetter (talk) 04:51, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

As far as I know, I've added the appropriate gfx and made the appropriate changes to doff templates to accommodate UR and Epic Doffs, but I think Eyes is the only one who can mess with the form itself. That being said, afaik all the Xindi Doff's should already be on the wiki... Category:Xindi duty officers

T6/T5U Mastery box[]

Is there a general consensus as to where should it go? Does it deserve its own lv2 heading, or should it go under Abilities? I've found a lot of inconsistencies across playable ship pages (actually, is there an example for how should a good playable ship page look? I can't find an example in STOWiki:Formatting)

Ryuga81 (talk) 11:17, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

I don't think there is a real consensus. There is some stuff added in the infobox template related to this but its not entirely setup correctly as it shows up on everything. Some ships, as you have seen, have a subsection related to it. Though they are few and far between. It's safe to say the wiki is way behind in that regard. Feel free to make edits to make them more consistent. Asanad (talk) 03:38, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Lockbox Traits[]

I was just curious if the unfinished Lockbox Traits on the 'Personal Traits' page are going to be looked at? I would be interested in attempting to do them, but my skills are sadly lacking in that regard, unfortunately. Plus, I wouldn't know where to even look for the trait icons required. If I knew that I could try (not promising anything) to work on them...unless someone already is ?!?! Navypiper (talk) 23:14, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

As far as I know, no one is actively working on them - I've added the ones I've unlocked, but I don't have access to the rest. For the icons, I just use Printscreen and crop the image. Jeffel82 (talk) 00:16, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Hi, its never too late to start learning. A lot of people's work here, including myself, has been trial an error. As for the images. I learned how to extract the actual in-game images and use them for the wiki.

Main Page revamp?[]

Hi guys, I was curious if some kind of main page revamp has ever been discussed? I have the feeling we could organize the information on the start page more clearly and maybe direct focus to certain content on the wiki (and in regards to STO's development). The page as it is seems rather static and doesn't do the many contributions that happen here regularly justice. To this end, I rather liked the idea of news banners which we had a couple of years back (some examples are still found on this very discussion page). Just wondering if this is something you guys (the admins) have been discussing or something that regular users might initiate/help out with. -- +Tadayou (talk)

I mean the Idea was great. Something i missed. The Structure of other Wikis, e.g. Neverwinther are easy to access the Informations. Thironix (talk) 18:08, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Gear Mark/Rarity in Articles[]

Recently, I've noticed some contributors changing gear mark and rarity to the highest. I would prefer it if the articles remained as they are, with the gear at the lowest quality/mark it is available at normally. I personally find that much more useful, although I can see why someone might argue otherwise. Is there an official stance on this? Which should we be using? --SubcommanderKinanra (talk) 20:09, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Galaxy map with an arrow indicating the system location[]

← Moved from Project:Admin noticeboard Hey guys, I'm new to STO Wiki, I just added a Galaxy map with an arrow indicating the system location to every system and sector page. I'm all done now and it looks great, I had a positive comment at the begin but now that I'm done Gliese876 has been deleting my maps as its not STO policies to have a map on every page

I disagree

The maps look great,

They are useful and they improve the quality of the system and sector pages.

The in formation is correct and true

I have had positive comment on my work,

Plus I just finished adding a map to ever single system and sector page, all the work is done now. It seems a waist of time and resorses to remove them now!

In addition it's my personal contribute to STO Wiki, something STO Wiki should embrace and encourage, isn't that what wiki all about

Most important it's a wiki editing contest and you should wait till after the contest before you delet some ones work, I feel deleting my work before the contest ends will discourage members from contributing, I speak from personal experience currently dealing with STO Wiki

I've spent so many hours making all these custom maps and very little sleep in the last nine days and I feel after a good sleep I can find several more reason to support my request.

I request that STO Wiki change there policies and keep the maps on these pages

I feel we should keep them up for now just to try it out, if STO wiki still feels my map work is no good by the time the have another STO Wiki contest I will be more than happy to enter the contest again and remove and edit every system and sector page.

Thank you for your time and concideration.

Switch to Hydradark skin[]

Sometime soon, probably later today, the wiki will be switching over to the Hydradark skin from the Hydra skin. This should have minimal impact. Examples of expected changes would be redirect arrows and many other small images across the wiki UI changing and the "your edit was saved" notice turning black. The main benefit of this is that going forward, any MediaWiki or extension updates should not result in unreadable text due to light text on light background. The worst case now will generally just be gray backgrounds that don't match.

Feel free to point out if anything that previously had a STOWiki-specific style has changed, because that probably means I overlooked something. >.> oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 17:50, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Upcoming changes to ad space and skin[]

Sometime between this Wednesday and next week Monday (May 11 to 16), the ad is going to be moved into a new siderail that will be displayed along the right side of the article. The good news is that the ad will no longer push infobox or other article content down or left, but the bad news is that the site layout will have to be changed to make space for the new siderail.

At least temporarily, I'll be adjusting STOWiki to a variable-width design more consistent with our other wikis. I anticipate I'll be removing the gaps in the "swish" at the top, but I don't think there will need to be any other changes required as part of this layout adjustment. I expect to do this early morning Wednesday.

These changes will not necessarily be final. After the siderail is in place, allowing everyone to see the change, we can explore other options. A couple examples would be applying a maximum width or having the skin automatically go to a percentage of browser width if there's enough room. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 02:57, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Just my 2 cents, but I'd appreciate a fixed maximum width or browser percentage width. Articles become somewhat unreadable on larger screens. Thanks for all the work, though, eyes. Very much appreciated. -- Tadayou (talk) 07:00, 11 May 2016 (UTC)
Regarding the orange PRO icon next to our names - any chance we could "hide" them under options, or make them white as it stands out too much on the black background. Especially on the Recent changes page. --Damixon (talk) 11:56, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Seconding this.   —Kinanra (talk) 17:37, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Added a gadget that will hide the pro badge. You can activate it under gadgets in your preferences.
I hope to have alternate layout options up for discussion by tomorrow or Saturday. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 03:41, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you :)   —Kinanra (talk) 04:50, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Layout options[]

I've had a chance now to check out the relevant dimensions and details of the siderail's behavior. Many of you probably aren't seeing it because of the Gamepedia Pro status; you'd have to log out and go to a regular article to see it. In short, if there's at least 990px total width available in the browser, it takes up 320px at the right side of the article space; otherwise, it doesn't show up. And it looks like I can target with-or-without siderail specifically when doing the layout. I would rather not go back to a true fixed-width layout because there's really no downside to supporting browser widths less than 1100px. So the questions I need the community to come to a consensus on are:

  1. Do we want to aim for a consistent maximum article space width?
    • For example, setting the overall max width at 1100px when there's no siderail and 1420px when there is should leave the article space the way it was before I made the full width adjustment.
  2. Alternatively, would we want to aim for a consistent maximum site width?
    • 1420px should make for article space as wide as it was before when the siderail shows up, but wider when there's no siderail.
  3. Would a middle ground solution be preferred, like switching to a percentage width for wide enough screens?
    • This would work like the maximum width solutions to a certain size, and then switch to percentage once the browser was wide enough.
      • For example, maximum site width of 1420px up to 1775px browser width, and then set side width to 80% if the browser is wider yet. (This makes for a smooth transition because 1420 is 80% of 1775.)
    • It'd let people with larger screens have more article width while still having side margins like the older layout.
    • Another middle ground solution would be to set up maximum side margins, but the percentage solution probably makes more sense.
  4. And of course, there's the option of leaving it as is now.

I'll leave this here for a few days to give everyone a chance to express their preferences. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 06:09, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Personally, I prefer Option 1. I wouldn't be opposed to making the maximum width wider than it had been, but having a consistent width whether or not the siderail is present is important to me, since it makes formatting articles easier.   —Kinanra (talk) 17:34, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
I lean toward Option #3 (the middle ground/hybrid approach), though either Option #1 or #2 might be OK as well (I'd have to do a direct visual comparison to be sure), since that would hopefully give more page width for those of us with wider monitors, while not looking too weird on any particular monitor arrangement. The pre-update page size was much too small, while the current setup (Option #4) is far too wide and maligns a lot of the page content for me without some sort of side margin setup. --MrTylerMaxwell (talk) 17:48, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Personally, I'd prefer a consistent maximum width (Option 1), but I could live with Option 3 as well. -- Tadayou (talk) 07:35, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
Putting option 1 in place for now. This targets an consistent maximum article width of 1060px, a bit over 25% larger than it was before. Again, I'll wait for at least a few days before making any other changes, but feel free to leave feedback in the meantime. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 23:21, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Infobox issue[]

I noticed that infobox isn't loading when I hover the mouse over icon/name while I'm logged into my account, while it loads without problems when I'm not logged in. Is this related to Gamepedia Pro status and https? I tried to restore my account Preferences to default but nothing changed, pop-up message box isn't displayed when it usually does. Anyone else experiencing this? --Damixon (talk) 10:17, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

There's probably an issue related to using HTTPS with that script. I'll investigate possible solutions or workarounds I get a chance. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 16:32, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
Just wanted to say that I'm also seeing this   —Kinanra (talk) 16:00, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Rather than debugging the old tooltip script, I'm going to switch the wiki over to an extension we have for this purpose since I've already seen it working correctly with HTTPS on Hearthstone. First, though, I have to remove the script and give it time to clear from various caches, so the tooltips may stop functioning completely until tomorrow. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 12:52, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Will that require some updating on the /Info pages? Asanad (talk) 00:45, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
I believe it'll work identically with the exception that it will no longer work on special pages like Recent Changes, in talk namespaces, and certain others. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 00:57, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
The TippingOver extension is now installed, and I've confirmed many tooltips are working correctly. There may be some lag with some tooltips becoming active due to the wiki's link cache, but many are already active. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 14:04, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Great, I see it works now. Thanks for finding a solution so quickly. --Damixon (talk) 19:03, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm not getting tooltips on icons anymore, is this intentional?   —Kinanra (talk) 23:45, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
It should work on image links as well, I believe. It's just a guess, but I think there might be a conflict with one of our extensions. It'd help if you could provide an example of an icon link that had a tooltip before. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 01:08, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
Icons from Template:Ship weapon nav were showing tooltips before (most of them have ITEMNAME/Info ) --Damixon (talk) 13:58, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
Also, the icons on individual item articles. I've yet to find an icon that is displaying a tooltip, actually. Another thing I've noticed is that weapon links are showing /Info in the weapon's name on the tooltip, they weren't doing this before. Hover over the Romulan Disruptor Wide Beam Pistol on Reman Science Officer Candidate#Items or the standard equipment on the various ship articles for examples.   —Kinanra (talk) 05:11, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
At least with that, I think I know what the issue is. My theory on the image links not showing tooltips didn't pan out, unfortunately. I'll investigate more deeply when I get a chance. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 07:31, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

(reset indent) Updates for these issues are in with dev now, but they probably won't be going out until the next scheduled deploy, which is presently planned for July 25. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 08:18, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

Tooltips are now functional for most icons, however there is still an issue with a handful of them. We sometimes use redirects on an individual item's article (examples: Console - Science - Plasma-Generating Weapon Signature Amplifier, Na'kuhl Temporal Operative Personal Shield), but still have a /Info for this item. Previously icons and links to these items would show their tooltips, but now they don't.   —Kinanra (talk) 23:54, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

The Mac users playing STO need to the the key commands. It is impossible to enjoy the gaming experience in the Star Trek universe with only the key commands for Windows+, and half of them don't work on the Mac. I would love to play the game but it is to frustrating when you can't perform commands. I think the game designers and programmers should have mac key commands and gives those commands for the mac. If they already done this could some one email my the key commands for mac.

Agents of Yesterday pages[]

I want to begin pushing AoY stuff to the wiki but do not know how to do so without the pages actually being live. What's a good way to hide these pages? SFC3 (talk) 13:12, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

I'm afraid the wiki software was really designed toward keeping everything public or private. It isn't really built to mix the two, and so there isn't really a good way to do this. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 23:26, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
I figured it out by making a subsection for the page not accessible by normal means. Thanks anyway! SFC3 (talk) 04:07, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
Just dropping by and wondering, why the pages should be hidden, at all? Isn't it in the spirit of a wiki that anyone should be able to contribute to the project? Unless you are creating pages on information that hasn't been officially revealed, wouldn't it be more advantageous to create these topics publicly, so people can chime in - which would also pave a away for information that is already up-to-date and polished once AoY goes live? -- Tadayou (talk) 07:46, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Historically, all Tribble content has remained hidden until launch. I remember this happening for Delta Rising and Season 9, even Season 11 with the Cardie arc revmap. I'd like to keep it that way, prevents spoilers and what not.
The pages aren't private anyway, they're under Agents Of Yesterday/Tribble Overview. I'm going to start filling out pages soon if you (or anyone else) is interested. SFC3 (talk) 21:14, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Keeping this info on a subpage for now is appreciated. Spoilers shouldn't go into the main articles until that content goes live for everyone :)   —Kinanra (talk) 22:20, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Does STO Wiki have an official spoiler policy? I was under the impression that it operates similar to other wikis, which usually treat spoilers as a non-issue (as spoilers should be expected from an encyclopedia). Of course I see that there's a fine line when it comes to content that is only in beta-testing. But maybe you should consider adding a note on the front page - I've been adding 23rd century characters to the canon elements template, for example, without thinking that people might consider that as inappropriate around here. -- Tadayou (talk) 08:27, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

I just wanted to put out a general call to start updating the wiki now that we're getting closer to release. Spoilers will not be much of a problem anymore, so I've started documenting the AoY mission changes. Temporal rep and spec have already gone up, so the next logical step is to start on the TOS faction pages and the mission pages themselves.

Any assistance would be appreciated! Thanks. SFC3 (talk) 06:40, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but what will we do with 'Playable starships' template? As far as I understood, all ships are playable by both TOS and normal Fed faction, so will we create a new TOS category or just add them to Federation starships? The only unique ship is Pioneer. Thanks. --PiralDorrm (talk) 07:42, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
That is a good question. Vet ships are identified by the little veteran icon - maybe we could use the TOS faction icon and space the Pioneer away from the rest of the tier 1 ships? Other wise, yeah, we can just integrate the Temporal vessels into the FED tier 2-5 line up. No big deal. SFC3 (talk) 07:57, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Ok, that's a great idea! Thanks. --PiralDorrm (talk) 07:58, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
BTW, since they are "Temporal" ships, we should also space them away from tier 2-5 ships, but keep them in the same categories. I think that's a fairly decent way of doing things. Anyway, I've started on the story content but I'm going to pick back up in the morning. SFC3 (talk) 08:00, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
I'll help, but I'm not on tribble so can't pull anything from there. --Damixon (talk) 10:08, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Do I have the permission to change the faction in all Federation playable starships' info boxes to 'Both Starfleet' like I did here: Temporal Science Vessel? We have to show that TOS Fed is a separate faction which has access to all ships normal Fed faction does. --PiralDorrm (talk) 13:38, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

list of randomly-generated names[]

Every time you get a new bridge officer the game generates a random name for that character. The character creation system also has a Random button that can give your character or ship a name if you can't think of one. I assume the game selects from a vast pool of potential names and that each species has a separate pool. I was wondering how many names are in each pool and if anyone wants to make a list of them. 10:41, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

While I'm sure the game uses a list like this for human and ship names, alien names are put together in a random fashion that differs for each species. Borticus explained this in a reddit comment before:
It's time for another look Behind The Dev Curtain!
To my knowledge, no one has tried to list all of the names that aren't randomly generated before. The ship name pools, for all factions, are small enough that seeing repeats is fairly common.   —Kinanra (talk) 16:42, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

If a completely new name is created each time someone gets a non-special bridge officer or duty officer, then what's the point of pages like Specialization: Advisor/Starfleet (A-M)? 01:56, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Ship comparison template[]

Can Template:Playableshipsbytype be expanded to pull data by NAME of the ships which is already collected by Template:Shiptypeinfo. For example, it would be useful to have table which contains only Kelvin Timeline Heavy Command Cruiser and Temporal Light Cruiser, or all 3 ships that come from Special Requisition Pack - 23rd Century Tier 6 Ship‎‎. This would provide easy comparison of specific ships. Would something like: ... be possible? Thank you. Edit: Or would that require Property with each ship name? --Damixon (talk) 20:54, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

Console Edition Page[]

Was wondering would it be possible to make an Icon or something to differentiate between the PC and console versions of the game? Because even though the console has practically the same things that the PC version has, it still has its large amount of differences.

Thanks, SpartanLane SpartanLane54 (talk) 16:10, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Something like these icons: PS4 and Xbox1? They could be added as a prefix before console related comment, packed inside a template. --Damixon (talk) 16:39, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

I'm curious: could you provide some examples of the differences? Obvious candidates would be anything related to UI and controls, but is there anything else? What I think we truly need is some console players who are willing to make edits. Jeffel82 (talk) 17:31, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

I am actually an active console player myself. I have started a new page already for the console edition. And some changes are items that are available on the C-store, and also the console version is behind the PC in updates. SpartanLane54 (talk) 17:40, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

For something exclusive to consoles, you can use Template:ConsoleOnly by placing ConsoleOnly on top of the article. --Damixon (talk) 19:07, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

So I just ranked up to Commander (20), and I went to purchase my T3. I went to use the reward credit on a ship, and it confirmed the purchase and completed the mission. I went to switch ships, and it was no where. What just happened?

If your inventory was full it for some reason, goes into your Inventory Overflow. You can find this below your regular inventory. SpartanLane54 (talk) 17:33, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Update the main page, please[]

Can someone update the main page, specifically the calendar events? They've been out of date for nearly 6 months. SFC3 (talk) 11:01, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Since that text is written directly to main page, it can only be updated by admins, which are all inactive. It could be made similar to "under construction" section, where content is updated through a template opened to regular members. Of course, long term solution would be naming 4 new admins, but I don't know if there are volunteers for that. --Damixon (talk) 14:05, 3 December 2016 (UTC)
For the immediate problem, I've moved the events to Events, which can accept up to ten events. Admins are a bit trickier due to policy, but I'm not at all opposed to getting a couple more active editors stepping up. Should anyone want to self-nominate, see (also, please link to the RfA page from this page to call attention to it). To nominate someone else, please refer to the policy. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 16:46, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Extensions[]

So I was looking at some other wikis Special:Version pages and I found some amazing extensions that I think would really benefit the wiki. They mostly improve templates and infoboxes. I am not sure if there are any conflicts or anything with what STOwiki currently uses, but I can verify that they all work on their respective wikis. Obviously, this would require an admin to implement, but as far as I know there are no currently active admins.

Portable Infobox - Creates portable infoboxes which can be rendered using clean semantic HTML markup on any skin / platform using using easy to understand powerful XML-like markup

Infobox Builder - Makes building infoboxes super quick and easy - just pick which one you want and the relevant section headers are automatically filled in for you

TemplateDraft - A cool tool that lets you pick the template you want to insert with a list, among other awesome things

Template Classification - A powerful and useful interface for classifying templates

Wikia still uses MediaWiki 1.19, and a customized version of that, IIRC. Even if there's no licensing issues to worry about, we're on MediaWiki 1.27. It's not likely the extensions are even compatible. I'm pretty sure the word is we can't use Wikia extensions anyway. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 00:28, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Gamma Quadrant Duty Officer Cache[]

Hi, because I just translate this site Specialization: Gravimetric Scientist#Charged Particle Burst variant, I wonder what is the "Gamma Quadrant Duty Officer Cache". I can't find any information about this. Blauzahn64 User-FED-Sig.png Send an e-mail to this user 19:50, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

No info on that, could be it meant to say Gamma Quadrant Duty Officer Cadre. --Damixon (talk) 12:43, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Console edition page addition to main portal[]

Can we get the Console edition page added to the front page? Would help visibility as well as console players. Working on the article now - when it's done console players will have a good grasp of what's available for them, and what's different between each platform. SFC3 (talk) 23:25, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Any ideas on where it should go? I'm a bit at a loss on what to swap out or rearrange for it. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 05:03, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
Get rid of the trait builds link on the left bar, that page has been outdated since 2011. --Dukedom (talk) 08:24, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
Alright, works for me. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 00:48, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Transcribing text from game[]

Here is a suggestion that someone could find helpful. Instead of copying description of an in-game item manually, you can take a screenshot and use one of the free online "image to text converters" which are very accurate and in the end reduce the time when adding info to the wiki article (at least for me). --Damixon (talk) 23:22, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Duty officer form[]

On more than few pages there is a note: "To add missing duty officers, please use the duty officer form." Word "Form" suggests there will be an empty fields I can fill to create a page, but all I see is someones failed attempt to create a Kobali doff. Is that form broken, or it always worked this way? I ask because "create a doff using form" note dates from 2011, while page Form:Duty officer is created in 2015 so I guess something went wrong at one point - anyone knows anything about it? Thanks --Damixon (talk) 14:27, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

I noticed this. We used to have an actual form for creating doffs, with actual fields, dropdowns, and radio buttons for things like race and images etc - it made it easy to add doffs. I've just gotten back after a long time away from this wiki, and have not managed to find that form yet (I used to maintain parts of it), mainly because I don't remember where it was. I was going to ask you, actually, if I saw you again in STO chat, before trying to contact User:OOeyes about it (He was my contact before, for such things). I figured I just forgot where the actual form was.
That page is strange. The history suggests that its always been that way. I can't see where the form may have been overwrittem. Regardless, as you say its referenced in many places as the way to create doffs, but I dont believe what is there currently is the recommended way to do that (at the very least it would need instructions to copy the contents to a new page). The better solution would be to have it be (or the links point to) that form I'm thinking of. Tahno (talk) 16:34, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Interestingly, I note some other issues regarding this form, earlier on this page... around April-June 2015. Tahno (talk) 16:47, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
You are looking for this --Dukedom (talk) 18:16, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
That *might* be it, but I don't remember seeing the 'Concept' namespace before. On typing in a name, it then takes me to Special:FormEdit/Duty_officer/name, which may be what I remember, except that rather than giving me a form to fill in, (which it definately used to do) it seems to now simply transclude the exact page in question. so I assume that the page that Damixon is asking about, is part of it, but doesnt currently have the right contents. I suspect OOEyes will clear it up when he pops in... he watches this page.
It should be at Form:Duty officer, so I'll go ahead and move it there. My best guess is that this it was moved inadvertently with namespace index changes in SMW or Semantic Forms, but it shouldn't be in Concept. Concepts in SMW are more like cached queries and have nothing to do with forms. oOeyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 21:38, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
That's what I remember. Thank you OOeyes. Tahno (talk) 22:10, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks OOeyes. --Damixon (talk) 23:17, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
So, now that's sorted out, Ive noticed that none of the newer doff images are tagged properly to be used in that form. (Benthan was one example, Kobali is another). I'll go through them bit by bit and tag the missing ones, and add the races to the appropriate templates etc, to get them in there. Tahno (talk) 05:09, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
I only had to go back to 2014 in my contribution history to find it. :D --Dukedom (talk) 07:15, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Question about Risa[]

Hello everyone:

Do any of you know what the portal/stargate looking device is that appeared in Risa's Caldera, right after the recent update? Is this a glitch, or part of an upcoming event? Any information, even strong theories, would be helpful. Thank you :) "Arista Dragonfire", ( Xbox live Bloodreaver1973)
It's a gate for the biathlon event, which is combined powerboard/floater race that was included in this year's summer event on PC. Looks like the console users will get it next year, and it's already been patched in. The same gate appeared on PC before the event started, confusing us all. Jeffel82 (talk) 12:48, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
