- For the NPC ships, see Federation Science Vessel (Mob).
Science Vessels are medium-sized, versatile ships. They have good all-round performance compared to escorts and cruisers, and have their weaker hulls compensated for by stronger shields. Science vessels are typically deployed in research and exploration missions, but are also effective in combat using powerful buffs, debuffs, and shield healing abilities, in addition to integrated sub-system targeting.
Compared to other Federation vessels, Science Vessels have weak hulls and strong shields, gaining a 30% bonus to shield strength over Cruisers of the same tier. All Federation Science Vessels have 3 device slots and gain a bonus +15 auxiliary power.

Science Vessels are versatile starships that perform well in all areas of space combat. They have innate abilities that allow them to upgrade their directed energy weapons attempt to render the targeted subsystem offline temporarily. These abilities, however, carry a large cooldown, and can backfire on the player by increasing the regular recharge time of the weapon that fired the shot. Given science vessels' strong shields, they generally have the weaker hulls compared to other starship types of the same tier, although this can be improved with the relevant skills.
Their Bridge officer seating allows the slotting of a Commander-level Science Bridge officer ability and generally several others, giving them access to a wide variety of Control, Drain, and Exotic damage abilities. This allows Science Vessels to perform a variety of roles, from crowd control to debuffing, to focusing on AoE or spike damage, or even support and tanking. Science Vessels are also a popular platform for builds utilizing Torpedo Launchers, particularly Exotic damage torpedoes.
While most Science Vessels have 3 forward and aft weapons slots and no hangar bay, there are a number of Science Vessels sub-types with more weapon slots or different weapon slot arrangements, or other special features, which are listed to the right and shown below in the Table of all Science Vessels. At Tier 5-U and Tier 6, all Science Vessels, Multi-Mission Science Vessels, Science Dreadnoughts and Science Destroyers use the same Science Vessel Starship Mastery package. Scout Ships, Science Carriers and Science Carrier Warbirds have their own unique Mastery packages.
To date, all Science Vessels, including all the sub-types, have 3 device slots except one: the Tier 1 Oberth Class Light Science Vessel, which only has 2.
Subsystem Targeting[ | ]
Science Vessels come with built-in Subsystem Targeting abilities. These built-in abilities stay at Rank I and do not automatically rank up when acquiring higher tier Science starships. They are separate from Subsystem Targeting abilities gained through Tactical Space Bridge officer abilities.
- Target Auxiliary Subsystems I
- Target Weapons Subsystems I
- Target Engines Subsystems I
- Target Shields Subsystems I
Activating a subsystem targeting ability will upgrade all energy weapons to inflict a stacking power drain on the foe's targeted subsystem for the next 10 seconds. They will also have a small chance to knock the targeted subsystem offline for a short duration.
Sensor Analysis[ | ]
Sensor Analysis is a toggled ability which can be used on any hostile or a friendly target within range, but the Science Vessel cannot target itself. It has only a brief cooldown (5 seconds), but it can only affect one target at a time. It will remain active indefinitely until manually toggled off. The sensor lock will also be broken if the targeted vessel moves out of sensor range (10 km), Placates the Science Vessel (such as with Jam Sensors, or is destroyed. If Sensor Analysis is toggled or forced off, all stacks granting bonus damage/drain or healing will be lost and must be gained all over again.
When used on a hostile target, it grants a +5% bonus to damage and power drain against that target; this is achieved through a reduction in the target's damage and drain resistance. The latter bonus is meant to complement the power drain of the Science Vessel's innate subsystem targeting, but will affect other power draining abilities as well. These bonuses will increase by an additional 5% every 3 seconds until achieving a maximum of 6 stacks for a total of +30% damage and drain. Additionally, at 6 stacks, the target suffers a 50% reduction to all incoming heals.
When used on a friendly target, that target receives a bonus of +5% per stack to all shield and hull healing effects received. Again, this bonus increases by 5% every 3 seconds until reaching 6 stacks for a total of +30% healing.
Secondary Deflector[ | ]
Main article: Secondary Deflector
Science vessels may equip a Secondary Deflector to further enhance their science skills. Secondary Deflectors of Very Rare quality and above will further enhance their innate sensor analysis or subsystem targeting abilities specifically.

Science Vessel Refit[ | ]
The Rhode Island class is a refit of the Nova class for the 25th century. The first vessel of its kind, USS Rhode Island was commanded by Captain Harry Kim. More capable a ship than the Nova and rivaling her sister ships, the refit can handle combat with heavy Klingon warships from 2404 and travel at warp speeds high enough to conduct deep space exploration.
Research Science Vessel[ | ]
The Federation Research Science Vessel is very distinct in appearance. They have, unlike most Starfleet vessels, a spherical main hull rather than the typical saucer style and their pylons which lead to the nacelles are connect to the fore section of the secondary hull in an up-swept fashion. The nacelles are also very long, typically spanning the full length of the secondary hull.
Advanced Research Vessel[ | ]
The Advanced Research Science Vessel is known as the new "workhorse" of the Federation, this ship type has been in Starfleet service since 2363. This class of vessel replaced the Miranda class as the multi-purpose mission vessel, taking on various tasks from patrols to humanitarian or diplomatic missions, exploration and research duties.
Long Range Science Vessel[ | ]
The Long Range Science Vessel is one of the most influential types of ships in Starfleet to-date. The most renowned Long Range Science Vessel, U.S.S. Voyager launched in 2371 was commanded by Captain now Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway.
Long Range Science Vessel Refit[ | ]
The Bellerophon class is based on the iconic Intrepid class, but with a more advanced design. The Bellerophon class has a unique half-moon shaped main deflector and distinctive blue bussard collectors, as well as the whiter hull color found in 25th century starship designs.
Reconnaissance Science Vessel[ | ]
The Reconnaissance Science Vessel is one of the newer line of Federation scientific starships in the Star Trek universe and was built not long after the Dominion war had ended with the purpose of exploration and research. One notable vessel of the Recon line (or more specifically the Luna class) is the USS Titan.
Mirror Universe Reconnaissance Science Vessel[ | ]

Tholian Iktomi[ | ]
Recent conflicts with the Tholian Assembly have resulted in a handful of captured Tholian vessels. Tholian technology is very different from other Alpha Quadrant powers, and these vessels are prized as opportunities for study as well as new combat vessels. The Tholian Orb Weaver is an example of an extremely versatile Science Vessel with variations on its orientation possible. However, with the turn-rate being as slow as it is, this ship will struggle to keep up with other Science Vessels.
Voth Palisade Science Vessel[ | ]
The Palisade Science Vessel boasts enhanced scientific capabilities, having first been designed for use as a combination exploration and research vessel. Despite being focused on the gathering of knowledge, this ship design is still fully capable of defending itself in a direct confrontation. This vessel is completely support-capable, allowing the restoration of nearby allied ships significantly easier on this vessel than other ships. This ship is an Engineering-oriented Science Vessel, making it unable to deal conventional damage but very capable of dealing exotic damage from Gravity Wells and such.

Other vessels with a Commander Science Bridge Officer:
- Science Destroyers are Science Vessels that can utilize a Tactical Mode to enhance their Tactical abilities in exchange for disabling their Science Vessel abilities.
- Scout Ships are hybrid Science Vessel-Raider starships.
- Science Carriers have the same weapon slots and innate subsystem targeting abilities of Science Vessels, and access to Commander-level Science bridge officer abilities, but have neither Sensor Analysis nor a Secondary Deflector slot. Carrier Warbirds are similar but further lack subsystem targeting. See the Carrier article for details.
- The Tier 6 Science Star Cruiser and Gorkon Science Battlecruiser possess the Sensor Analysis ability innately, but have neither subsystem targeting nor a secondary deflector.
