TheTradingChannel[]

Hello! Was curious as to why TheTradingChannel was removed. Thanks! Ayius (talk) 05:17, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

REDALERT Channel[]

Why is the REDALERT [TTS] channel not allowed to be displayed on this page? The page was created as a global channel directory and the channel was created for Borg Invasion content discussion on the Tribble Test Server. The Borg Ground Invasion is being released on Tribble later this week and having both Holodeck and Tribble discussion on one REDALERT channel results in a lot of confused channel users. I don't edit or delete your channel info, I only update the numbers for all of the channels, so please explain your selves? ~ Alecto November 9th, 2011

Alecto, perhaps you're not reading the edit log. I've been the one removing your entry. I maintain the Global Chat Directory. There is no need/reason to list Red Alert TTS. It's redundant. There are no Red Alert Features currently being tested on Tribble or Red Shirt. I havn't allowed that other Red Alert channel to be posted in the the same reason. Redundancy. When I removed the edit I explained why and you've been the one adding it back without asking why it was removed. There's no reason for it to be listed. You can let people know via your forum post (which is still listed in the description) or in the main channel. Furthermore all Test toons are gonna be deleted anyway, so there's no point to doing Red Alerts on tribble unless they are testing something new with red alerts, and that doesn't require a new channel either. Hope you understand. Please do not re-add Red Alert TTS to the directory. -- BrooklynKnight 00:36, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
BrooklynKnight, thank you for your reply. I apologise for not asking why it was removed the first time around; I'm still learning how to use STOwiki and I didn't realise it was removed the first time and I thought that I had not successfully added it. Then I checked the History after it was removed the second time and read that you didn't want two REDALERT channels listed, so I added it to the channel description. Unfortunately my edit, which added further information about the channel was reversed by Dukedom who explained that the description should be kept simple, even though there are other channel descriptions that are a lot more complex. I'm extremely disappointed by your reasoning, simply because I believe it's very important that players know the difference between the REDALERT and the REDALERT [TTS] channel. The first being for Holodeck and the second being for Tribble. The Borg Ground Invasion will be patched to Tribble later this week and the REDALET [TTS] channel is for discussion of this content. If players discuss this new content on the REDALERT channel, Holodeck users will become confused. Both of these REDALERT channels are for discussion on ground and space Borg Invasion content, not just the space content. I can not justify the importance of the REDALERT [TTS] channel any further, thank you for your time. ~ Alecto November 10th, 2011
It is neither neccessary to mention that a channel is player created (they all are), nor do we need multiple external links to explain the purpose of a channel. Please elaborate which important information is not given in the current revision? --Dukedom 06:56, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

= Volunteers Needed[]

Who wants to make this page more pretty and add some more channels? Maybe a pidgin guide? BrooklynKnight 00:30, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Dumb question time[]

I don;t see any reference to this in the article but are these text chat or voice chat channels? --Drmike 00:40, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

They are all text chat. --MatthewM 15:29, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

UFC / UFC-TEAM channels[]

Why were channels UFC and UFC-TEAM removed?

They were NOT fleet channels. They were for ANY player to join as well as something small fleets could utilize as well.

If these channels were for a single fleet or just for an alliance, I could understand it ... but these channels have always been public as we've always wanted regular players to join and use them.

These channels were set up to help strength the PLAYER community. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PATHFINDER (talk · contr)

DOFF channels[]

Is there a practical difference between DOFFexchange and DOFFtrader? They both seem to describe barter and sale, so I'm unsure why they've both come into being. Not to mention that "Exchange" is the name for the game's EC auction house, so that's a loaded term which gives the impression of being related. Brackynews 04:11, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Considering that both channels are user created, it's probably two different users wanted to start their own. Either that or they were unaware of each other. I;m actually waiting for EliteSTF to start splintering due to the recent taking it private. I;ve already seen 2 different channels started due to it. Regards --Drmike 11:45, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Removal of EliteSTF[]

Since *SOMEONE* likes seeing descriptive edits when information is removed, I gather EliteSTF got removed since it is now private? Not complaining. Just putting it in writing. :) --Drmike 16:14, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, Looks like EliteSTF was removed because it is no longer open to the public without an invite. You can still find more info about the channel over at the STO forums. Currently there are no private (or in this case invite only) channels listed on this page. Podcast channels?[]

Just was wondering. We remove Fleet and Alliance channels. Is there a reason why we're allowing podcast channels to remain on this list? I would think that that would even be worse as it;s a third party that sits outside the game while the Fleet and Alliance channels are within the game. Thanks --Drmike 11:27, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

More information for complete noobs, please?[]

I still can't work out the absolute basics of using STO's chat system. (Haven't used IRC much before.) Two channels seem to appear by default, "Local" and "Zone" (are those channels?). What's the drill with those two? "Zone" I can't access, and I've forgotten what it said I have to do to get access - can't get the message to appear again. Things typed into "Local" appear in my chat window and in a bubble over my avatar, but nobody ever answers so I don't think they go anywhere.
Where would I ask for help with using the game? And where could I chat in-character without looking a bit dotty?
Sorry, I don't suppose this is really the place to ask about this, only I don't know where else to ask since I can't use the IRC!

Dorado channel[]

Looks like it's decision time, since we've already effectively reached three reverts on whether or not the Dorado channel is included. I have no strong opinion one way or the other, so I'm looking for input from the community on whether it should be included or not. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig 18:36, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps some general rules overall would be best to resolve these types of issues. For example:
  • Minimum number of users. This is a listing of major channels, not a comprehensive list of the hundreds (or thousands) of channels in game. Minimum number of users ~100?
  • Public vs private. Private channels, by their nature, cannot be joined by anyone without an invitation. If this is a service to the community, it should not be gated behind inivitation only.
  • Redundancy As previously discussed in the talk page, having multiple channels for identical or very closely related purposes only fractures the community. Or, if we do have similar channels have them lumped together or listed following the main one (i.e. Really Big STF Channel. Description. Channels like this: STF Alpha, STF Bravo, STF Charlie.)
  • Other factors Fleet channels seem to be discouraged since it relates to a small group. Podcasts tend to be more inclusive in terms of external input.
Thoughts, opinions? --MatthewM 19:45, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

I decided to list our channel here because it is a public and popular help and advice channel as described in your introduction to the Global Channel Directory. On two occasions it has been made private for very brief periods of time when problematic players were kicked from the channel for harassment or bad behavior, in order to discourage those players from rejoining the channel immediately. The player who was most recently removed from the channel is the same person who has deleted our listing on the STO wiki twice today. He is also, by his own admission on our voice server, the person who decided to delete the listing for the Elite STF channel recently. We have over three hundred players on the channel. It's not a fleet channel or a fleet alliance channel. It is a help and advice channel open to anyone who wishes to join and help create a friendly community of helpful players within the game. We would like to continue to be listed in the Global Channel Directory and recommend taking action against this harassing player who chooses to take matters into his own hands instead of contacting the proper administrators. Thank you for your consideration. Live long and prosper. --Dorado 20:26, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm all for leaving out fleet, alliance, and private channels. +1 for leaving that as it is. I am torn on the third party podcast channels as that's an external venue. To be honest though, I don't think an updated listing of the number of users on the channel is necessary.
If one wants to look at the issue of "harassment", Thoughwot has at least made edits elsewhere within the wiki. Dorado appears to only be here to promote the channel and, in the past, his fleet. If the channel is as helpful as Dorado says it is, why aren't other players promoting the channel as well? I don;t have a problem with personal promotion but at least I do my own in my user space and others have referenced the dil pricing chart.
In the channel's defense, it does meet the listing criteria. I don't have a real problem with it being listed. Just the constant updating bugs me. --Drmike 23:56, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
The global channel directory has proved to be contentious. This isnt the first time we've been close to an edit war on this page.
As far as I'm concerned the wiki community has already voted on this topic (broadly speaking) and we found in favour of keeping community sponsored events and resources. I've not seen anything from Curse or from Cryptic to ask us not to cover unofficial resources. I agree that we should have basic notoriety criteria, as I dont want this page to list every channel available in game, but User:Dorado seems to have made a good case to me. I'd personally rather avoid a heavy-handed approach, but if it comes to it we can hold a vote on requirements for inclusion in this page, specifically. For the time being though, I vote we keep it. --Zutty 10:28, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
The number of additions followed shortly by removals has seemed a bit high lately, but I do tend to agree with avoiding strict standards, and that the removals have been consistent. The upsurge in this activity might be nothing more than essentially a statistical blip at this point, so I agree for now to stick to our current flexible standards. I also agree that the Dorado channel meets those standards and can stay on the page. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig 11:48, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
What about the issue of the channel number counts? I'm sorry but I don;t see a real need for them and those seem to be the main reason why this page gets edited so often. I'd rather have a visitor join a channel and see if it helps him or her instead of them thinking "Oh it only has 4 members listed. Must be worthless." and skip over it. Also considering the rest of the counts are probably out of date and not updated, it's probably not correct information either. --Drmike 12:11, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
