The traits tab of the character menu of an Alien with all unlocked slots. The non-customizable racial trait can be viewed by clicking the "Details" button next to the character portrait (Aliens do not have an innate species-trait). The "Personal Traits" may be changed at any time. Reputation and other traits are below.

Traits add extra bonuses to attributes or abilities of your player character. Most traits are passive bonuses, but some also include a special ability your character can activate. Each trait either gives a bonus for ground or for space combat. Traits therefore have a direct influence on the overall strengths of your character and, along with your skills and Captain Specializations, are a key to adapting your character to your play style. Unlike skills, however, traits can be reassigned in-game without cost anywhere within missions, social hubs, or in sector space.

Trait slots[]

A level 65 character has slots for the following amount of traits:

  • 1 Species Trait: A permanent, non-customizable trait (which may consist of more than one bonus) based on the choice of the player species.
    • Alien captains have no species trait, but instead receive 2 additional personal trait slots (1 personal ground trait slot, 1 personal space trait slot) upon character creation.
  • 18 Personal Traits: Additional selectable traits which can be changed in-game. Some personal traits are available to every character, while some are restricted based on the player's career path (adding 4 specific traits to the player's choice) as well as species, or are exclusively obtainable by finishing Research & Development schools or purchasing Genetic Resequencers (found as rewards, or by opening lockboxes and sold on the exchange under the Reward Pack category).
    • There are 18 personal slots unlocked by default, split between space and ground. Aliens will have a total of 20 slots. 3 slots are unlocked upon character creation, with 1 additional slot becoming available every 10 levels until level 60.
    • 2 additional personal trait slots (1 personal ground trait slot, 1 personal space trait slot) can be unlocked for a character upon applying a [Elite Captain Training Token].
  • 4 Starship Traits: Additional selectable traits which can be changed in-game and only affect space gameplay. Starship Traits can be unlocked via the Captain Specialization system, Starship Trait Packs (found as rewards, or by opening lockboxes and sold on the exchange under the Reward Pack category) or by achieving the final tier of Starship Mastery in most Tier 6 ships.
    • There are 4 starship trait slots unlocked upon reaching level 50.
    • 1 extra starship trait slot is purchasable from the Fleet Research Lab. 1 ship-specific starship trait slot is unlocked by applying an [Experimental Ship Upgrade Token]. This slot is available for use at any level, so long as the ship in use is upgraded to T6-X status.
  • 16 Reputation Traits: Traits which are unlocked via the reputation system. Active Traits grant a clickable ability for either space or ground combat depending on the respective reputation faction.
    • There are 4 personal reputation slots each for Active Space, Active Ground, Passive Space, and Passive Ground Traits, all unlocked at level 50.
    • 1 extra slot is purchaseable for each personal reputation trait category at the Fleet Research Lab.
  • Other Traits: Special traits obtained from certain missions that are automatically slotted.

Species traits[]

Each playable species (except for Aliens) has an innate, i.e., built-in and unchangeable, trait. Not occupying any trait slot, species-specific innate traits are usually a combination of two or three Personal traits (which are then no longer among the selectable trait pool for a given species).
