Each passive trait either gives a bonus for ground or for space combat. Traits therefore have a direct influence on the overall strengths of your character and, along with your skills and Captain Specializations, are a key to adapting your character to your play style. Unlike skills, however, traits can be reassigned in-game without cost anywhere within social hubs or in sector space.
A level 65 character has slots for the following amount of traits:
- 1 Species Trait: A permanent, non-customizable trait (which may consist of more than one bonus) based on the choice of the player race. Alien captains have no species trait but instead receive two additional personal trait slots (one for ground, one for space) upon character creation.
- 18 Personal Traits (9 slots each for space and for ground; 3 each at beginning, 1 additional slot each every 10 levels until level 60): Additional selectable traits which can be changed in-game. Some are available to every character, while some are restricted based on the player's career path (adding four specific traits to the player's choice) as well as race, or are exclusively obtainable by finishing Research & Development schools or purchasing Genetic Resequencers (found by opening lockboxes or sold on the exchange under the Reward Pack category).
